International Partnership for Community Resilience: Japanese Volunteer Organisation ‘Rocinantes’ Visits One Health Centre

Khartoum, June,13. 2026 — In a significant step towards broadening international academic and humanitarian networks, the One Health Centre recently welcomed Dr Naoyuki Kawahara, the Country Director of the prominent Japanese volunteer organisation Rocinantes.

The high-level visit focused on aligning the strategic objectives of both institutions to address complex health challenges through collaborative research, sustainable capacity building, and grass-roots community health programmes.

*Bridging Research and Fieldwork*
During the visit, the leadership team at the One Health Centre presented a detailed overview of its core mission and vision, emphasising the interdisciplinary nature of the One Health approach, which looks at the interconnected health of humans, animals, and their shared environment.

Dr Kawahara shared insights into Rocinantes’ extensive field experience in delivering primary healthcare, maternal and child health support, and critical clean water infrastructure to remote and underserved regions. The discussions highlighted a powerful synergy between the Centre’s academic and clinical research capabilities and Rocinantes’ proven model of community-led development.

*Strategic Dimensions of the Potential Collaboration*
The meeting mapped out concrete avenues where the two organisations can pool their expertise to build stronger local health systems:

*Translational Research & Surveillance:* Combining academic research on infectious disease dynamics, environmental factors, and neglected tropical diseases with direct field observations to design more effective health interventions.

*Empowering Local Healthcare Workers:* Developing joint capacity-building initiatives and training modules designed to equip rural frontline health professionals with advanced clinical skills and One Health methodologies.

*Integrated Community Health Delivery:* Exploring ways to integrate clean water access, hygiene education, and primary medical care directly into community health programmes, ensuring long-term sustainability.

“To solve modern health crises, we must bridge the gap between high-level scientific research and actual field realities,” noted Dr Ali Awadalla, Centre’s director. Dr Kawahara and the Rocinantes team bring invaluable ground-level experience. By combining our academic frameworks with their field operational expertise, we can create truly resilient, sustainable health solutions for the communities that need them most.”

The visit concluded with a mutual commitment to draft a collaborative framework, signalling a shared vision between Japan and local partners to advance the One Health agenda and improve public health outcomes globally.
