Advancing Knowledge: Scientific Research and Development at the National University of Sudan
The National University-Sudan plays a central role in promoting scientific research and development, contributing to knowledge creation and addressing pressing challenges within Sudan and the broader region. Through dedicated centres such as the One Health Centre and the National University Biomedical Research Institute (NUBRI), the university fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, builds research capacity, and advances solutions that improve public health, animal health, and environmental resilience.
The One Health Centre
It embraces the integrated perspective that human, animal, and environmental health are deeply interconnected. By bringing together professionals from medicine, veterinary science, public health, environmental science, and related fields, the centre focuses on complex problems that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries. Key areas of emphasis include understanding and controlling zoonotic diseases, addressing antimicrobial resistance across humans, animals, and ecosystems, improving food safety and security, and investigating how environmental change affects health. The One Health approach also prioritises training and capacity building, preparing the next generation of researchers and practitioners to design and implement coordinated, system-level interventions. https://nu.edu.sd/one-health-centre/
The National University Biomedical Research Institute (NUBRI)
It serves as a focal point for advanced biomedical and translational research at the university. NUBRI’s work targets disease mechanisms, diagnostics development, and the evaluation of new treatments, with a strong commitment to addressing conditions particularly relevant to Sudanese and regional populations. Research activities span studies of disease pathogenesis, drug discovery and development, biotechnology and diagnostic innovation, clinical research, and applications of genomics and proteomics. By leveraging modern methods and local expertise, NUBRI seeks to translate laboratory discoveries into interventions that improve patient care and public health outcomes. https://nu.edu.sd/national-university-biomedical-research-institute-nubri/
Drug Discovery & Bioinformatics Laboratory
The Drug Discovery & Bioinformatics Laboratory serves as a multidisciplinary hub integrating computational modelling, chemical synthesis, and natural product research to accelerate the identification of novel therapeutics. It operates a seamless discovery pipeline, beginning with in silico target identification, virtual screening, and ADMET prediction, followed by experimental validation through synthesis and bioactive compound extraction from Sudanese biodiversity. The laboratory prioritises diseases of regional importance, including malaria, neglected tropical diseases such as leishmaniasis, and mycetoma, while aligning with the One Health approach to address zoonotic and environmentally linked health challenges. It also plays a key role in capacity building, training researchers in computational chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and advanced analytical techniques under international Good Laboratory Practices. Through strategic collaborations, data-driven innovation, and translational research, the laboratory contributes to the development of safe, effective, and accessible drug candidates for Sudan and beyond.
Scientific Publications
Publication and dissemination of research findings are fundamental to the university’s mission. The university researchers share their results through peer-reviewed journals, conference presentations, technical reports, and other scholarly outlets. Publishing ensures scientific rigour through peer review, promotes knowledge sharing that stimulates further inquiry, and enhances the institution’s visibility and credibility. Importantly, research outputs also inform evidence-based policy and practice, providing a foundation for public health guidelines, improvements in clinical care, and community-level interventions. https://nu.edu.sd/publications/
Together, these research entities strengthen the National University-Sudan’s capacity to generate high-quality, actionable science. Their interdisciplinary orientation, focus on locally relevant problems, and commitment to training and dissemination position the university as an important contributor to regional and global efforts in health and environmental sustainability. By advancing integrated research and translating findings into policy and practice, the National University continues to support better health outcomes for people, animals, and ecosystems.
