Background
The Faculty of Clinical and Industrial Pharmacy (FOCIP) at the National University of Sudan is working towards becoming a leading centre of excellence in pharmacy education, research, and community engagement both nationally and internationally. As Pharmacy is the science of medication, it focuses on producing competent, ethical, and compassionate pharmacy professionals through innovative, evidence-based training aligned with global standards.
Committed to advancing health research, community development, and sustainable progress, the faculty emphasises critical thinking, lifelong learning, and strong partnerships with healthcare and academic institutions. Upholding core values such as integrity, fairness, transparency, and respect, NUSU–FCOIP strives to maintain a reputable role in improving medication outcomes and fostering a healthier, more equitable society.
Since 2015, NUSU–FOCIP has been accredited by the British Accreditation Council (BAC). This accreditation has enhanced the institution’s international reputation and standing. To date, sixteen batches have graduated, with the first batch completing their studies in 2010.

Its goal is to provide innovative, evidence-based pharmacy training that complies with global standards, encourages critical thinking, and cultivates compassionate, skilled healthcare professionals. The Faculty is dedicated to promoting high-quality, impactful medication research and significant collaborations with communities, healthcare organisations, and academic partners to advance patient-oriented medications, equity, and sustainable development.

NUSU–FOCIP is committed to outstanding academic excellence, enriching health research, and promoting social responsibility within a vibrant, student-centered educational environment. The Faculty strives to develop competent, ethical, and compassionate pharmacy professionals dedicated to lifelong learning and evidence-based practice. To graduate innovative critical thinkers who are responsive to the therapeutic needs of diverse populations and equipped to tackle local, regional, and global pharmacy challenges. In partnership with healthcare systems and the wider community, the Faculty aims to make meaningful contributions to improving drug therapy outcomes and fostering sustainable pharmaceutical solutions.

- To graduate practitioners holding a Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPham) degree, who possess a strong community-oriented approach, along with ethical and professional commitments.
- To uphold and promote the values and ethical heritage of the Sudanese nation, NUSU will implement strategies that reinforce these principles as a core part of NUSU’s philosophy and mission.
- To enhance pharmaceutical and therapeutics research by utilising the university’s facilities and communication capabilities.
- To contribute to community development by providing pharmaceutical services through its pharmacy institutions and collaborating organisations, thereby supporting overall societal well-being.
- To participate in the design and implementation of pharmacy programmes and plans by utilising the expertise of its specialists and consultants.

The Faculty of Clinical and Industrial Pharmacy comprises six harmonised, interrelated departments that collectively form the backbone of the Pharmacy education, research, and practice. These departments foster a comprehensive understanding of the science of medication, ensuring that future medication professionals are well-equipped with knowledge, skills, and ethical standards essential for excellence in the science of medication (Pharmacy).
These departments work synergistically to provide a comprehensive, integrated pharmacy education that balances theoretical knowledge, practical skills, research, and ethical practice. Their collective goal is to produce competent, compassionate, and innovative drug expert professionals ready to meet the evolving demands of pharmacy.

Department of Pharmacology
Recognised as a cornerstone of pharmacy education, this department focuses on the effect of drugs on living systems..
Teaching Programmes:
- Covers core pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics aspects of drugs.
- Conducts courses from the second to third year, including “Man and His Environment” and system-specific modules.
- Employs lectures, practicals, and simulation-based learning to reinforce drug 3ffect concepts.
Innovation & Research:
- Supports research on moods and mechanisms of action of drugs.
- Integrates technological advancements like virtual labs and interactive simulations to enhance learning.
Department of Pharmacognosy
It is a well-recognised and significant area of pharmacy education; this department focuses on the study of drugs from natural sources and studies the Galenical preparations and the extraction, separation, purification, and identification of the active ingredients, in addition to the structural elucidation of the Novel compounds. The science covers a large area of Ayurvedic medicine.
Teaching Programmes:
- Covers natural products used in medicine from plants, animals, and environmental sources.
- Conducts courses in the third, fourth, and fifth year, including natural flora, traditional and folk medicine, such as acupuncture, cupping, and cosmetics.
- Employs lectures, practicals, and simulation-based learning to reinforce pharmacognostical concepts.
Innovation & Research:
- Supports research on natural products and their use in medicine and their clinical applications.
- Integrates technological advancements like virtual labs and interactive simulations to enhance learning.
Department of Pharmaceutics
Recognised as one of the cornerstones of pharmacy education, this department focuses on the functioning of the pharmaceutical preparations and the techniques used in the preparation of different formulations.
Teaching Programmes:
- Covers core pharmaceutical topics, such as preparations of formulations and different pharmaceutical dosage forms, and the rational, appropriate, accurate use of active ingredients and excipients.
- Conducts courses from the first to fifth year, including the study of raw materials and dosage forms administered by different routes
- Employs lectures, practicals, and simulation-based learning to reinforce pharmaceutical concepts.

Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry
Recognised as an indispensable part of pharmacy education, this department focuses on the study of the chemical reactions used in pharmacy and the synthetic routes leading to the formation of drugs. It outlines the chemical structures of drugs and explains theories of drug interactions and structural activity relationships.
Teaching Programmes:
- Covers core chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry topics such as organic, inorganic, medicinal, and pharmaceutical chemistry.
- Conducts courses from first to fifth year, including reactions and synthetic pathways of drugs, in addition to drug discovery.
- Employs lectures, practicals, and simulation-based learning to reinforce pharmaceutical chemistry concepts.
Innovation & Research:
- Supports research on chemical drug reactions and their importance for the science of medication.

Department of Pharmacy Practice
Recognised as an essential area of pharmacy education, this department focuses on the rules, regulations, law, and ethics that govern the practice of the pharmacy profession.
Teaching Programmes:
- Covers professional practice topics such as occupational guidelines in different aspects of the profession and the legal responsibilities related to violation of law and vicarious liability, in addition to the concepts of autonomy and ethics.
- Conducts courses from the third to fourth year, including management of the workplace and relations with the customers, employees, companies and colleagues.
- Employs lectures, practicals, and simulation-based learning to reinforce physiological concepts.
Innovation & Research:
- Supports research on pharmacy practice, roles and responsibilities in addition to the penal and criminological procedure laws and their clinical applications.
- Integrates technological advancements like virtual labs and interactive simulations to enhance learning.
Department of Clinical Pharmacy
New era in the development of pharmacy education. Utilising the science of pharmacology in the accurate, precise and reliable therapeutic management protocol and providing evidence-based interventional assistance to the medical team, this department focuses on the area of drug-drug, disease, and food interactions in addition to the drug efficacy potency and pharmacovigilance.
Teaching Programmes:
- Covers core safety, efficacy and double blind therapeutic trials.
- Conducts courses from the fourth to fifth year, including “Man and His Environment” and system-specific modules.
- Employs lectures, hospital rounds, and simulation-based learning to reinforce clinical pharmacy concepts.
