Background
The Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the National University of Sudan (NUSU–FOMS) aims to be a leading center of excellence in medical education, research, and community engagement both nationally and internationally. It focuses on producing competent, ethical, and compassionate healthcare professionals through innovative, evidence-based training aligned with global standards. Committed to advancing health research, community development, and sustainable progress, the faculty emphasises critical thinking, lifelong learning, and strong partnerships with healthcare and academic institutions. Upholding core values such as integrity, fairness, and respect, NUSU–FOMS strives to maintain a reputable role in improving health outcomes and fostering a healthier, more equitable society.
Since 2015, NUSU–FOMS has been accredited by the Sudan Medical Council (SMC), ISO 9001, and the British Accreditation Council (BAC). These accreditations have enhanced the institution’s international reputation and standing. To date, sixteen cohorts have graduated, with the first batch completing their studies in 2010.

Departments
The Faculty of Medicine and Surgery comprises ten harmonised, interrelated departments that collectively form the backbone of medical education, research, and clinical practice. These departments foster a comprehensive understanding of human health and disease, ensuring that future healthcare professionals are well-equipped with knowledge, skills, and ethical standards essential for excellence in medicine.

Department of Internal Medicine
The Department of Internal Medicine is dedicated to advancing evidence-based clinical practice through rigorous teaching, research, and mentorship. Its expert physicians serve as role models, emphasising the importance of integrating the latest scientific knowledge with compassionate patient care.
Teaching Programmes:
- Core clinical concepts are imparted to medical students primarily during their clinical years.
- In the Faculty of Medicine, the department leads the Internal Medicine course in the fourth year, covering fundamental internal medicine principles, including cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, and endocrine systems.
- The department also conducts the Emergency Medicine course, focusing on acute care skills, triage, and critical decision-making.
Research & Innovation:
- Emphasis on translational research to improve patient outcomes.
- Promotes multidisciplinary collaboration and clinical audits.
Department of Surgery
The Department of Surgery strives for excellence in surgical education and practice, fostering professionalism, technical competence, and ethical standards among future surgeons.
Teaching Programmes:
- Provides comprehensive training in fundamental surgical principles, perioperative care, and surgical sub-specialties such as neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, and pediatric surgery.
- The Surgery course is delivered in the fourth year, integrating didactic lectures, simulation labs, and operative observations.
- Emphasises hands-on skills development through practical sessions and surgical workshops.
Research & Innovation:
- Encourages participation in clinical research projects, quality improvement initiatives, and innovations in minimally invasive surgery.
Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology
This department aims to cultivate professionalism and expertise in female reproductive health, encompassing obstetrics, gynaecology, and reproductive medicine.
Teaching Programmes:
- Focuses on core concepts of pregnancy management, reproductive health, and gynaecological conditions.
- In the fifth year, students undertake the Obstetrics & Gynaecology course, which includes clinical rotations, case discussions, and simulation exercises.
- Promotes understanding of ethical issues, patient communication, and multidisciplinary team collaboration.
Research & Community Engagement:
- Active involvement in maternal health research and women’s health advocacy.
- Community outreach programs for prenatal care and reproductive health education.
Department of Paediatrics

- The Paediatrics course is conducted in the fifth year, combining clinical clerkships, case-based learning, and simulated scenarios.

Department of Anatomy
The Department of Anatomy provides foundational knowledge of human structural anatomy essential for clinical practice.
Teaching Programmes:
- Offers a comprehensive curriculum in gross anatomy, histology, embryology, and neuroanatomy.
- Courses are delivered from the first to third years, combining lectures, dissection labs, histology practicals, and neuroanatomy sessions.
- Emphasises an open, safe, and respectful learning environment, fostering curiosity and professional conduct.

Department of Pathology

- Courses covered include Blood and Lymph, Principles of Disease, and system-specific modules.

Department of Microbiology

- Conducts courses from first to third year, with foundational modules like Principles of Disease (Year 1), Entomology, and Parasitology.

Department of Physiology

- Covers core physiology topics such as cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, endocrine, and neurophysiology.
- Conducts courses from first to third year, including “Man and His Environment” and system-specific modules.
- Employs lectures, practicals, and simulation-based learning to reinforce physiological concepts.
Innovation & Research:
- Supports research on physiological mechanisms and their clinical applications.
- Integrates technological advancements like virtual labs and interactive simulations to enhance learning.
Biochemistry, Molecular biology and Genetics, and Bioinformatics
This department strives to provide a deep understanding of the molecular basis of health and disease, emphasising integration with clinical sciences.
Teaching Programmes:
- Offers courses from first to third year, including Nutrition and Metabolism, Endocrine System, Basic Biochemistry, and introduction to bioinformatics.
- Incorporates both lectures and laboratory practicals to teach biochemical techniques, enzyme assays, and metabolic pathways.
- Promotes understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying physiological processes and diseases.
- To provide students with the fundamental knowledge and practical skills to use computational tools, databases, and analytical methods for understanding, analyzing, and interpreting biological data in research and applied life sciences.
Research & Collaboration:
- Encourages interdisciplinary research in molecular biology, genetics, translational biochemistry and bioinformatics insilico researches.
- Supports student-led projects to explore biochemical aspects of health.
- To enable students to integrate bioinformatics approaches into medical research and collaborate with clinicians, researchers, and data scientists to advance diagnosis, treatment, and personalized medicine.
